The opportunity
As Program Coordinator – AFL Western Sydney Indigenous Academies, you will play an important role in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people to achieve positive education, wellbeing and employment outcomes. Through culturally appropriate mentoring, engagement and pathway support, you will help students build confidence, strengthen connections and realise their potential.
Working across partner schools in Blacktown and Campbelltown, you will coordinate the delivery of in-school and after-school academy programs, build strong relationships with schools and community stakeholders, and ensure programs are delivered in line with their objectives.
This is an identified position. The AFL considers that identifying as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person is a genuine occupational requirement for this role under Section 14(d) of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
What you’ll own
This role combines program delivery, stakeholder engagement and student mentoring to create meaningful outcomes for young people across Western Sydney.
You’ll add value through:
- Coordinating the delivery of the Western Sydney Indigenous Academies across partner schools in Blacktown and Campbelltown
- Delivering culturally appropriate mentoring, support and leadership development opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
- Building trusted relationships with school leaders, Aboriginal Education Officers, students, families and community partners
- Supporting students to improve school engagement, attendance, completion and transition outcomes
- Connecting students with education, employment and community opportunities that support long-term success
- Coordinating after-school academy activities focused on community connection, health and wellbeing
- Supporting the development and implementation of academy term plans and program initiatives
- Leading and supporting casual program staff to deliver engaging and impactful programs
- Monitoring participation, attendance and program data to support reporting and continuous improvement
- Identifying and supporting students who may require additional assistance or intervention
- Managing program administration, including research, bookings, stakeholder coordination and activity planning
- Working collaboratively with AFL NSW/ACT, schools, community organisations and the GWS GIANTS to maximise program impact
What you’ll bring
- Identification as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person
- Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, communities or education programs
- Strong understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people in Western Sydney
- Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships and engage effectively with students, schools and community stakeholders
- Experience delivering mentoring, wellbeing, education or youth-focused programs
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to coordinate multiple activities and priorities
- Sound project coordination and administrative capability
- Well-developed written and verbal communication skills
- Experience collecting, managing and reporting program data
- Ability to exercise sound judgement and respond effectively to complex situations involving a range of stakeholders
- Demonstrated capability to support, mentor and guide casual staff or volunteers
- Certificate qualification in community services, health, youth work, social work or a related field
- Current Class C Driver’s Licence and access to a reliable vehicle
- Current Working with Children Check and National Police Check
- First Aid Certificate (desirable)
