ABOUT THE ROLE – This is a seasonal part-time role, approximately 4hrs per week from Jan – Sep 2026 in Queensland

Purpose – why this role is important  

 

The State League & Talent Pathways (SLTP) VFL Boundary Coach, Qld is a specialist position providing integral support to the respective Head Coach – VFL Boundary and the QLD based VFL Umpires.  Holding technical expertise, Coaches will positively impact the development of VFL umpires and continuously improve the program and its associated outcomes.  VFL Coaches are important to the program achieving its purpose to service the game by developing individuals to be the best they can be via a safe, inclusive, high-performance program that produces a diverse talent pool of AFL/AFLW ready umpires.

 

In collaboration with the Head Coach, this role supports the delivery of high-quality umpiring programs to the VFL Boundary Umpires that best prepares them to officiate VFL matches and develop umpires in readiness for AFL and/or AFLW selection.

    • Senior Squad Umpires officiate the VFL Men’s Competition that operates in Victoria, NSW and Qld

This role also supports the enhancement of talent identification opportunities in collaboration with AFL Queensland that ensures talent from community umpiring can reach the SLTP program

 

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF

Key Accountabilities:

  • Support the development and facilitation of a high-performance experiential learning program that supports the continued development of umpires officiating at the State League level
  • Training, Coaching & Umpire Meetings
    • Attending all prescribed training and coaching season one night per week at AFL Queensland, Zillmere
    • Conduct 1:1 or small group coaching meetings with umpires as required, particularly with regards to Performance Development Plan (PDP) groups.
  • Attend, assess and coach Senior VFL Umpires on match days as rostered.  This will be in addition to the part-time coaching responsibilities and paid at casual match day rates.
  • Proactively collaborate with other Squad Umpire Coaches to supports a safe, inclusive, and positive training environment for all disciplines

  • Strong communication and written skills in particular the ability to provide honest, clear feedback
  • Empathy and ability to build strong relationships built on trust
  • Understanding of AFL industry and knowledge of the Laws of Australian Football
  • Team orientated
  • Ability to work flexible hours (nights and weekends)

 

Desired:

  • Previous involvement in umpiring at elite level
  • Prior experience coaching umpires in the AFL or Talent Pathway
