ABOUT THE ROLE
The Head of Participation is key senior leadership role in Game Development that has ownership of driving, growing and supporting all AFL participation formats and programs. Reporting to the General Manager, Game Development, the role oversees all grassroots participation programs and activity nationally, including Auskick, Superkick, School programs, AFL Nines and other new ways to play that are launched, as well as the transition into junior football. This includes supporting fit for purpose participation planning and casual workforce planning.
Playing a critical role in supporting Game Development’s ambition to reach 1 million registered participants by 2033, we’re on the lookout for an experienced senior leader with a strong background in participation, who understands and is able to translate data driven insights into effective planning.
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF
- Oversee and lead the strategy and growth of AFL participation programs across the country.
- Lead the national team responsible for the AFL’s participation programs and formats including supporting the states with the delivery and execution of Auskick, Superkick, School programs, AFL Nines and other new ways to play.
- Bring new participation programs to market nationally.
- Oversee development of AFL schools strategy and implementation model nationally including the transition from school programs into community football.
- Lead casual workforce planning nationally, ensuring workforce resources are aligned with state participation needs.
- Standardise program offerings (product, price, servicing) across States and Territories to deliver best offering in market that maximises participation.
- Provide leadership and guidance for all State and Territory Participation Managers.
- Develop strategies to increase transition of kids between AFL offerings.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives across participation programs, including process enhancement, operational efficiency, and participant experience.
- In conjunction with each Head of State set targets, KPI’s and budgets to be delivered at a state level.
- Contribute to key projects within and outside of core role and contribute to the success of the broader team.

- Demonstrated senior leadership experience with proven ability to manage and develop people and teams.
- Strong understanding of grassroots sport and participation programs.
- Ability to translate strategic objectives into actionable state-level plans and measurable outcomes.
- Understanding of workforce planning, resource allocation and operational management.
- Strong financial acumen and budget management capability.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement, relationship management and influencing skills; confident challenging convention when required.
