ABOUT THE ROLE

Community coaches are the heartbeat of community footy – they bring the energy, fun, and encouragement that keep players coming back. Whether it’s teaching new skills, cheering from the sidelines, or building team spirit, they help create a game-day experience that players love and remember.

 

The National Community Coach Lead is responsible for leading the strategic direction, development, and delivery of community coaching initiatives across Australia. This role is responsible for improving the end-to-end coaching journey and ensuring that coaching at the community level is inclusive and engaging. A key focus of the role is to continue to improve the quality of education, support and recognition of community coaches through extensive engagement with key stakeholders.

 

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF

Key Accountabilities:

  • Leading the development and implementation of the AFL’s National Community Coaching Strategy driving initiatives to improve coach recruitment, retention, satisfaction, and recognition
  • Developing and monitoring key metrics and targets and identifying key insights and trends to be addressed (including working with the Data & Analytics team to develop dashboards to automate visibility of these metrics/targets to key stakeholders)
  • Championing the use of technology to improve the end-to-end coaching journey streamlining coach onboarding, accreditation tracking, and communication
  • Integrating digital learning platforms and blended models to enhance accessibility, while applying a modern approach to community coach education that combines online and in-person learning throughout the coach lifecycle.
  • Managing, maintaining and reviewing coaching accreditation processes and coach development tools including relationships with third-party providers as relevant
  • Supporting State/Territory Community Coach Leads to implement coach development programs and share best practice learnings
  • Support initiatives that promote positive coach behavior on match days through role modelling, respectful communication, and reinforcing a culture of sportsmanship and integrity
  • Develop scripts and manage the production of engaging video content that highlights coaching stories, promotes key messages, and supports the growth and visibility of community coaching through targeted marketing channels
  • Represent the AFL in national coaching forums, working groups, and industry events
  • Promote diversity in community coaching by supporting the initiatives outlined in the AFL Women and Girls Game Development Action Plan and actively contributing to Women’s Coaching Month programs and activities
  • Supporting and contributing to the success of the broader Game Development team

Core competencies:

  • Extensive experience in coaching development or education within AFL or a comparable sport.
  • Understanding of the AFL community football landscape, including Auskick, junior, youth, and senior levels.
  • Proven ability to lead national programs and influence and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience working with technology to enhance user experiences
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and leadership skills
  • Effectively lead, motivate, and develop a high-performing team
